about

The Old Rope 7” series continues with two Xylocaine tracks produced in the same week back in May 1995. Graceland on side A is a collision of disparate sample sources, many of which were captured at random from Australian free-to-air television (in the usual Xylocaine style). Australians familiar with the popular cultural landscape of 1995 may be amused at the unusual sample frottage taking place between Big Maxie Walker and a subtle grab of the the then-current ABC-TV station ident. All of that is tied together with 2nd generation Think and splintered Amen breakbeats, plus noise and punchy Amiga kick drums on top. The track was specifically produced to be played through an outboard effects unit, and can be heard played live like this at the beginning of the drunken “Bloody Fist - Live At The Slaughterhouse May ’95” demolition party recording (FISTC-08). On that recording the track was accidentally stopped early due to a young Mr Lubinski being a (as he describes it) ‘pissed idiot’. The track was rarely (if ever) played live anywhere else after that, and never obtained a full proper release on any format. After disappearing into obscurity, it was discovered on a rotting floppy disk during one of several 2017 Bloody Fist archiving sessions. It has been captured here from the original unaltered Amiga MOD file, played through effects as originally intended.

Side B features a track that was produced in the same week as Graceland in May 1995, and was also the final track on FISTC-08 Live At The Slaughterhouse recorded later that same month - Fiftyfive. The ominous voice sample from which the track derives its name was again snatched randomly from television, this time from a humanitarian aid charity appeal. Fiftyfive never gained a full release anywhere, and only appeared in a messy live version on the end of the Slaughterhouse cassette, before almost disappearing completely down the memory hole by way of a mouldy floppy disk. The track was salvaged in 2017 and required some minor surgery due to a partially corrupted sample (courtesy of the original mouldy floppy) - and now here it is - liberated, recovered and immortalised on wax, much to your neighbour’s disappointment.

Appearing at the end of Side B is an oddity which turned up during the aforementioned 2017 BF Amiga archiving sessions. The track Hat Felt is apparently an early version of the Xylocaine track Fast Breeder, which appeared on both the full length Xylocaine cassette release ‘The Tape’ (FISTC-14), and also on the Strike Records 12” Pressure Sores EP (STRIKE21), both released in 1997. This prototype version is previously unreleased, and blasts by at a million miles an hour. It ends in a lock groove that’ll make you call a mechanic.
