When German compilation label Steady Beatz reissued NCL Trax v1.0 in 2004 for the German chain store market, it was a quick and dirty gamble that perhaps didn't pay off as expected. They were returned to the distributor months later in spades, allegedly due to the unremarkable cover art, which was noticeably devoid of monsters, skulls and explosions. As a result, there's a handful of them here which Bandcamp can hopefully help us punt out to a whole new generation who are only just discovering the joy, pleasure and warmth of over-manufactured and overstocked compact discs in fragile jewel cases.

Anyway, $30 AUD gets you one of these embarrassing relics delivered direct to your residence, place of work or post office box as well as an immediate download of all 30 tracks which you can enjoy listening to via your hand held mobile telephone or through those tiny and mostly inadequate laptop speakers that make Skrillex YouTube clips sound so good.

about

As 1998 rolled around, the Germany based distributor for Bloody Fist started making noises down the telephone and the telefacsimile at regular intervals about a CD compilation featuring highlights / lowlights of the late 90s Bloody Fist repertoire. After several months of inertia, Gaz (who had been organising the 'Smoke Screen' nights at the Lucky Country Hotel in Newcastle) started messing around with possible designs for the CD insert. Meanwhile ideas for the compilation were being tossed back and forth between people involved with the label - and the occasional outsider - with one particular fan of the label from Sydney calling the office one afternoon and suggesting the compilation be titled 'Fisting By The Pool Volume 1'.

All of this sitting around bullshitting eventually culminated in one single frantic weekend in September 1998 where the entire compilation was recorded and compiled at a house in the Newcastle suburb of Tighes Hill, looking across onto Newcastle's (soon to close) BHP Steelworks. Telephone calls were made throughout the preceding week to everyone involved in making music for the label at the time, who were told to turn up at the house any time on the Saturday with 2 or 3 tracks each for possible inclusion on the compilation. A no show on the Saturday meant no compilation slot. During the course of that Saturday, practically everyone involved with the label turned up at some stage to drop tracks off or oversee the recording and compiling. Tracks were recorded in one room of the house, and then ferried to the living room where Gaz (who by this time claimed to know what he was doing with Sound Forge) would master them (ie.'Ultramaximize' the shit out of them) and arrange them in order. Overnight Saturday and Sunday were both spent with no sleep, arguing and fussing over the final track order and 'was it loud / obnoxious enough?'. Final decisions were also made on the artwork and the title of the project, which was named out of a respect for the PCP Frankfurt Trax compiltions which had been released a few years earlier.

The compilation hit the shelves late 1998 as a double CD with an 8 page booklet. The German distributor was happy and managed to shift quite a few boxloads of them. 5 years later, Laurent Ho licensed the compilation for release in the French territory on Uncivilized World, translating the rambling that appeared in the booklet into French and also managing to shift quite a few in the process. The following year, just as Bloody Fist was about to wind down for good, the compilation took off again, this time courtesy of German compilation label 'Steady Beatz' who managed to cram it into a load of German chain stores - where presumably it sat largely unsold until they were returned for credit and eventually liquidated as distributor cut-outs.
