Memetic returned to Bloody Fist for their final 12" in early 1999 with their unusual and uncompromising take on hardcore electronic music. By this time their previous output had been appreciated by only a select handful of people and derided/dismissed by many others as 'chaos-core' or nothing more than 'dreary noise'. There were two distinct styles being explored within Memetic - Ian was experimenting with a lot of breakbeats and polyrhythms while Darren's output was extremely machine-like and ultra chaotic. During the recording of this particular 12" the Amigas were fed directly into an ancient guitar mini practice amp with a built-in malfunctioning spring reverb (which 'wobbled' when the amp was subject to a kicking). An 'industrial Rolf Harris' introducing the record was a highly entertaining thought, and the loud metallic wobbling noises present at the start and end of Side A actually came from two or three people kicking the shit out of the amp as the Amiga mods began and finished. The signal was fed directly to DAT from the amp's mono line out (look mum, no mixer!), and due to the amp being at the end of its days an amazing high-end rawness was added to the tracks (rendering them almost unlistenable).
As usual with most Bloody Fist 12"s throughout the 90s, fuck-all time was spent on the artwork - which Ian knocked up in a lunch-break using scissors, paste, a newspaper, photocopies from a textbook and a Bloody Fist business card. The perfect visual accompaniment! For two months after the recording was made, the master DAT was shuffled between several different mastering houses in Europe, who all refused to cut the 12" due to the amount of unpalatable and thoroughly intentional high-end frequency present in the recordings. Eventually the record was cut successfully using direct metal mastering to maintain the extreme top end.
Predictably, the master DAT then went AWOL.
The record was released to no fanfare whatsoever in March 1999 and sold swiftly through its initial pressing, undergoing a single repress some months later.

This capture was pieced together using several original near-mint vinyl copies of the 12" as the source, with minimal denoising.

FIST20 remains one of the best and proudest fuck you's in the BF catalogue and was the perfect way to see out all those cargo pants, tribal tatts, blowfly sunglasses and party-gabber records that ruined the 90s.
