about

After being on a European tour or two in 1998 and absorbing all the various strains of drum and bass happening in both the UK and Europe, it was decided that the next release in the Bloody Fist catalogue would be a take on these sounds. Side A was influenced directly by Panacea's entire 1997 output on German label Chrome which regularly veered off into the 'drum'n noise' realm. It was discovered that these records were heavily derided and dismissed in the UK during 1997 and 1998 by the drum'n bass 'elite'. This idea was very very attractive. Let's have a go. Result = 'Grief'.

During the time spent in London in 1998, any available radio on the weekend was always tuned to Rude-FM 88.2. There were always very serious guys playing very serious stripped-down repetitive records that sounded like machinery revelling in some sort of surreal melancholy. Tapes were made, studied and fallen in love with. Let's have a go. Result = 'Fallout'.

Hate mail began to be collected and cherished within 2 weeks of the actual 12" release in September 1998.
'Bloody Fist is a joke label making joke releases!' screamed some irrelevant Scandinavian speedcore fuckwit.
'Fucking sellout drum'n bass faggots!!!!' screamed another.
'That's not drum'n bass, it's just noisy fucking shit!' offered yet another self-appointed scene king.
Opinions from all corners. Delicious. All of it. (And some of it perhaps not entirely undeserved).

Both tracks were programmed and recorded by Mark N using an Amiga 600, beat up 4 track and the same half-dead effects unit used on FIST16. All sounds were nicked and recycled off other records, as with all Overcast projects. Creative or blatant theft? You decide. The production is proud in it's roughness and the result probably didn't date too well, but it's preserved here for better or for worse.
The original pressing of the 12" sold out almost immediately and it was subsequently re-pressed 3 times. Two disasterous attempts to remaster and reissue the 12" were made sometime around 2004, one involving a cutting engineer who had no idea what the fuck he was doing and the other involving a chewed DAT tape.
