about

During the mid-90s the Newcastle 'band scene' was extremely vibrant with endless styles, gigs and venues happening every week. We had started hearing rumours about a 'band' called Fraughman who were playing support slots for various other bands around Newcastle. We heard rumours that one of their 'performances' involved effects pedals connected to contact mics which were in turn connected to a clothes dryer full of nuts and bolts. We heard rumours about tape loops the size of entire rooms. We heard rumours that they had used contact mics inside an old typewriter and 'played' the keys with sledgehammers. We heard rumours about terrified sound engineers, disgruntled venue managers and a damaged sound system or two. Eventually Fraughman became the solo act of one Steven Stuart, and amongst the tape loop experiments and torturous feedback there was experimentation with breakbeats and distorted kick drums. This was not neat and tidy distortion though - this was the roughest distortion on the fucking planet. Eventually Steven was commissioned for a 12" release on Bloody Fist in early 1998, and the result was fucking insane - making DHR sound like 2 Unlimited. The production and programming was so utterly coarse that it truly sounded like the beats had literally been sandpapered over. The 12" was initially released in a very limited quantity during April 1998, and two further limited re-pressings took place in the following months. The second track on the B-side is 12 minutes of straight noise and remains the most difficult listening in the Bloody Fist back catalogue. True Novocastrian grit. Pure and unadulterated FUCK YOU on wax.

Produced by Steven Stuart in Newcastle early 1998 using Amigas, a 4-track, guitar pedals and what sounds like several rolls of sandpaper. Limited 12" release April 1998. Copies sold direct from the Bloody Fist office were shipped in a limited photocopied picture sleeve.

Note: The digital files have been transferred from the original 1998 DAT master and contain various artifacts present in the original recordings.
